What are donor-advised funds (DAFs)?

Donor-advised funds are tax-advantaged investment accounts, like 401(k)s for retirement or HSAs for healthcare. Donors contribute cash or assets for an upfront tax benefit, invest the funds, and then recommend grants to nonprofits.

What are the advantages of using donor-advised funds (DAFs)?

  • Streamlined Philanthropy: Centralize your giving and record-keeping in one account.
  • Tax Savings: Get an upfront tax deduction, avoid capital gains on appreciated assets, and your DAF investments grow tax free.
  • Easier Decisions: With funds already set aside, DAF gifts don’t affect your budget. It’s like a gift card you’ve given yourself—so you get even more joy from your giving!

What are the rules surrounding donor-advised funds (DAFs)?

  • Only qualified tax-exempt organizations can receive grants from DAFs.
  • DAFs can’t be used to make gifts that result in benefit to the donor (i.e. event tickets, gala tables, auction purchases).
  • Contributions into DAF accounts incur tax benefits, not gifts out of one.
  • Each DAF provider sets its own minimum gift size & account size.
