Foster Parent Training

Foster parents must complete 33 hours of pre-service training, prior to accepting a foster child for placement. Foster parents in the Treatment Family Foster Care program must complete additional pre-service training hours, through the Parenting Skills Training (PST) curriculum.  After this initial training, foster parents must complete annual recertification training. Foster parents who work with children with particular needs (i.e., mental health disorders or medical conditions) may need to complete condition-specific training annually.

Recertification Training

All foster parents must attend recertification training on a yearly basis. See the calendar below for topics, dates and locations.

Please note: Absolutely no children will be allowed in the training room. Please be on time; anyone arriving over 15 minutes late will not be admitted. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.


Online Training

NYS Office of Children and Family Services, Bureau of Training, and CDHS offer live online training for foster and adoptive parents through the use of virtual classroom software, LearnLinc. This virtual classroom software enables users to connect and communicate over the internet and conduct a live instructor-led learning session. All software requirements are provide free to participants through an established licensing agreement between NYS OCFS and iLinc Inc. Participants need only purchase a computer headset with microphone. Click here to access the online training


Mental Health Trainings

Mental health trainings are required for foster parents providing care for a child with specific diagnoses. To register for a mental health training, please contact:

MAPP Trainings

MAPP trainings are required for those in the process of becoming foster parents.  Trainings are held periodically throughout the year, on Saturdays from 10 am-4 pm.  For upcoming MAPP training dates, please contact our recruiters:
